Hair Transplant Review

Average Cost for Hair Transplant

How much does a hair transplant cost?

That is one of the most-asked questions among people considering a hair transplant.  And the truth is, it varies with several factors.

Here are the factors that go into the average cost for a hair transplant:

#1 Number of Grafts You Need

For example if your surgeon charges $7 a graft and you need 500 grafts, you're looking at roughly $3500 (plus tax).

But if you need more coverage and need 2000 grafts you can go up to $14,000. Your surgeon can give you an estimate of how many grafts you'll need for your particular situation.

#2 Price Per Graft

Prices vary based on surgeon (and even type of method used). For example, a surgeon that is more highly skilled with better credentials may charge you $7 per graft whereas someone with less skill or experience may only charge $4 per graft. (Sidenote: While price is an issue, I would greatly recommend you do it right and go with the more skilled surgeon).

#3 Surgeon's Level of Expertise, Skill and Experience

See #2.

If you live near a major city hub (i.e. Toronto, New York, L.A) you'll probably have access to highly skilled surgeons that are familiar with the most cutting edge surgical technologies. They'll also probably charge a bit more.

If you don't live near a major city and you go with someone local, you could pay less - but the result may not be everything you're expecting. (Some people don't care - they just want hair. Some people are particular about the hairline, density, etc.)

If you really want the best natural look available, you may even want to fly to a major cities to have your surgery done there. I know of one particular surgeon in Toronto who has clients flying in from all over the world to see him.

#4 Repair Work

Unfortunately one of the most popular hair transplant procedures is repairing a bad (read: cheap) hair transplant that was done in the past.  This can include adding more hair to a badly done hairline or even a scar revision that makes a scar smaller and less noticeable.

While your surgeon can quote an average cost for this, in general repair work will cost you more than a regular transplant - another reason why you really want to do it right the first time.

One of the best things you can do to get an idea of the average cost for a hair transplant is to interview as many surgeons as you can.  You'll get a wide range of quotes plus you'll get a feeling for which doctor meshes with your needs best.

Keep in mind to that many surgeons do offer flexible payment plans which can make a hair transplant quite affordable.

Another thing many people don't know is that often, prices are flexible. While you don't necessarily want to get into a bidding war with your surgeon, if they know you're looking around and interviewing various other surgeons, they're more likely to give you a lower quote.
